Maths and Reading Exhibits
Today we set up our room just like a modern day museum! We made lots of exhibits.
An exhibit needs to have a label or sign to go with it so that people know what they are looking at.
We made a FRACTIONS EXHIBIT to go with or maths learning.

Luca cleverly created an exhibit of a farm and made a tree out of cardboard to go with a book he read today called The Toy Farm. He is working on a sign to go with his exhibit.

TAPS Football Tournament

On Thursday 21st May TAPS had a Football Tournament. Other schools came to compete in some games on our fields. We had some new goals made for us and all of our teams did really well on the day. We learnt lots of new skills and even enjoyed playing in the rain!

Inquiry

Where in the world will we go today?
This is our big question.
Every Friday after morning tea we line up with a passport ready to go on an adventure.

First we arrived in Antarctica.
Our classroom was very cold and we learnt that Antarctica is in the South Pole. It is a continent all on its own. Nobody lives in Antarctica. Scientists, explorers and tourists go there to stay and lots of penguins live there.
Did you know that polar bears DO NOT live in Antarctica, they live in the Arctic which is the North Pole.

Check out Waipuna's Antarctica slide presentation.

Next we visited Egypt
We found out that Egypt is in the continent of Africa. Most of Egypt is desert and it gets very hot. The River Nile is very important to the Egyptian people because they get their water from it. We learnt about camels, pyramids and mummies. We even wrote our names using hieroglyphics and learnt to speak some Arabic.

Check out Jack and Floyd's Egyptian slide presentation.

Japan: Here we come!
While visiting Japan we learnt that school children have their lunch in the classroom every day. It is usually fish, soup and some sort of seaweed. They bow before they eat and at the end of the day all of the children clean the school. They are very serious learners!

Jane Lyttle bought in some Japanese treasures to share with us. We had a turn with some chopsticks and even ate dried seaweed.
The Japanese people celebrate Children's Day every year on May 15th. All of the children make koi kites on this day and fly them. We made koi kites to hang in our classroom.

ANZAC

As part of our learning about ANZAC Day we visited Anzac Green. We walked amongst the crosses and looked at the cenotaph which is now covered in flowers that people put there on Anzac Day to remember the soldiers who were in the war.

We baked anzac biscuits. Our recipe made so many biscuits that we were able to eat them everyday of the week with our milk after lunch time. We even took some to Anzac Green with us.

Hockey

We have been learning some Hockey skills. We know how to hold a hockey stick correctly and have been having fun playing games.

Maths
In Maths we are learning about compatible numbers.
Compatible numbers are numbers that are friendly. We can see numbers that are friends by making tidy tens and then thinking about the left overs. It's a little bit like eating your favourite food on your plate and saving the not so favourite things to eat last.
Here we are having Rocket Races using three dice to see how quickly we can make compatible numbers.

Our Classroom
We can use our chrome books to help us learn at Maths and Reading time.
Here we are having some basic facts races.
We like to challenge ourselves!
This is part of our Published Gem Wall where we put our fantastic writing. We have got our photos on the wall and have written about ourselves so that we can all get to know eachother really well.
